How to Maintain Galvanised Iron Barrels

2025-12-18

Proper maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity of galvanised iron barrels. So how should we care for them?

Before using a galvanised iron drum, apply a thin layer of oil such as peanut oil or lard. This forms a protective film on the surface, shielding it from chemical reactions with oxygen. After prolonged use, if the drum develops a blackened appearance, never scrub it with household steel wool, and certainly avoid cleaning agents containing bleach. While these may temporarily restore its shine, they will damage the protective layer. Over time, the bucket will become increasingly prone to staining, causing you more and more trouble.

The correct approach is to sprinkle detergent or cleaning powder onto a soft cloth, dampen it slightly, then wipe the surface. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and leave the bucket outdoors to air-dry naturally. Never store galvanised iron buckets in damp, airtight conditions, as this will cause corrosion due to moisture retention.
